HONG KONG！China¨s toys and games industry is optimistic about 2010 being a better year for exports, despite ongoing challenges. This is according to Global Sources¨China Sourcing Report: Toys & Games.
This report covers infant toys; dolls, action figures and plush toys; toy musical instruments; role-play sets; building blocks and construction sets; science and discovery sets; craft kits; clay dough and modeling kits; flying toys; inflatable toys; ride-on vehicles; RC vehicles; and electronic toys.
＾Despite overseas sales from January to November of 2009 having declined by 11% to 11.5 billion units worth nearly $7.2 billion, 59% of respondents are expecting at least 10% growth for 2010, while 26% anticipate sales growth of within 10%,￣ said Livia Yip, publisher of the report.
＾We also notice that efforts to expand market reach into emerging economies, such as non-EU countries, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region, are being intensified as sales to these areas during the first 11 months of 2009 showed significant growth.￣
Primary challenges faced by China suppliers:
29% cited price competition;
26% pointed to stricter overseas standards;
15% indicated design copying/piracy;
12% cited the cost of raw materials;`
9% indicated labor costs; and
9% pointed to the Yuan-USD exchange rate.
Improve operating efficiency to gain competitive edge
Over 50% of survey respondents plan to improve operating efficiency, while 21% plan to widen product selection to bolster competitiveness. Others intend to provide more staff training, and adopt measures to help reduce manufacturing costs and shorten design development time.
Yip said, ＾In response to growing demand for ecologically safe toys, a few top tier companies are releasing models made of environment-friendly materials, such as sawdust and bamboo. On the other hand, many of the toys are designed to introduce children to ｀green¨ living. For example, toy cars and trucks come with a solar generator station that recharges the vehicles.￣
